The Importance of Proper Water Pressure

|

We all understand that stronger water pressure is more satisfying in a shower and that lower water pressure can indicate a problem in the pipes. Water pressure is far more important than that, though, and maintaining correct water pressure is vital to the overall health of your plumbing and the safety of your home.

What Is PSI?

Water pressure is measured in PSI, or pounds per square inch. A higher PSI means more water is rushing through your pipes at a faster rate. PSI levels are moderated by law to ensure that things don’t get out of hand; typically, the maximum PSI you’re allowed to have in your pipes is 60, but it’s recommended that you go lower than that.

High Water Pressure Problems

If your water pressure is too high, it can damage your pipes. This is because the sheer quantity and speed of the water hitting the metal may cause it to start corroding, warping, or bursting entirely. Strong water can break through seals and cause leaks or create a “water hammer” effect when you flush.

If the water is too powerful for your pipes, it’s likely too powerful for you. The most pressurized water can cause serious damage to you and your property.

Low Water Pressure Problems

The flip side is that when water pressure is too low, you may not have enough water to do multiple tasks at once, such as washing the dishes while somebody else is in the shower. Otherwise, these tasks will take much longer to complete, wasting your time.

At worst, low water pressure will lead to sediment buildup because your faucets won’t drain fast enough. Sediment buildup can clog or corrode your pipes, which can create leaks and lead to health risks.
