The water entering your home is an important part of your everyday life. Without it, things would be rather difficult. Unfortunately, sometimes the water does not always arrive at your faucet in pristine condition. In this case, we need to figure out the source of the problem and what we can do to fix it.
Funny Smell
Tap water should not have a smell, meaning if it has a funny smell, there is something in the water that shouldn’t be there. Sometimes an excess of minerals in your water can make it have a sort of metallic smell. Algae blooms can give your water a musty smell. If your home uses a water softener system, too much of the salt will produce salty water. Or if there are bacteria growing in your water heater, it can smell like sulfur or rotten eggs. The treatment plan will depend on the cause of the funny smell.
Looks Cloudy
Water that looks cloudy is not always a bad sign. If you experience water that looks milky, set it aside for a minute or two. If the bubbles dissipate and the water turns back to clear, it is just pressurized air escaping into the water. If the cloudy color does not dissipate, you may have a larger problem. Water that contains extra minerals like magnesium and calcium is hard water and may appear cloudy straight from the faucet. Other reasons for cloudy water include dirty pipes and malfunctioning water softeners.
Metallic Taste
A metallic taste to your water could indicate deposits of zinc, iron, or manganese in your drinking supply. Believe it or not, the most likely culprit is your pipes. As the pipes in your home age, small pieces of the metal leech into the water as it passes through, giving it that metallic taste. Unfortunately, it usually happens after the point the water gets filtered, making it more important to get this fixed sooner rather than later.
