3 Ways To Safely Clean Your Stainless Steel Sink

|

Many of us are looking for ways to stay busy during these cold winter months – especially now that the holidays are over. Keeping warm and staying productive are the priorities for the rest of this winter season.

Cleaning and organizing are great ways to do both of those things and everyone likes to start the spring with a head start on the spring cleaning.

However, if you have a stainless steel sink. It isn’t as easy as just cleaning. You have to be very careful when choosing cleaning products and other items because the contents could be damaging to both the sink and the drain.

As you are planning your winter cleaning activities, make sure to keep these tips in mind:

  • Keep an eye on your water and make sure it isn’t too hard or doesn’t have a high iron content. If you do have a high iron content in your water, you might start to see what looks like rust but is actually iron deposits. These will start to form around the drain opening and in the creases of the sink. You can treat this by either towel drying the sink after you use it or you can use a water softening system.
  • When you are cleaning your kitchen sink make sure to be thoughtful about what you are scrubbing it with. Sponges that are made of or contain steel wool can be highly abrasive and will actually deposit tiny strands of steel wool into the metal of the sink. This can be very damaging to the sink but can also cause what appears to be rust in the sink. The tiny shards of steel wool that are embedded in the sink will start to rust and make your sink look rusty too.
  • Never use chloride cleaners when you are cleaning a stainless steel sink. This is especially important when shopping for bathroom and kitchen cleaners as these items are notorious for containing the dangerous chemical.

Follow these simple tips to make sure that your stainless steel sink gets cleaned without getting damaged.
